„My path to the JKI: A roundabout route to success“
My entry into today’s Julius Kühn Institute began in 1994 as a temp assistant in the library of the then Biological Federal Institute. I quickly felt: this work fulfills me. From the start, JKI offered me the chance to take responsibility, engage, and grow professionally – which made my start here so special.
Soon I received a fixed-term full-time contract. To become a long-term part of the institute, I concurrently completed a self-funded training to become a specialist for media and information services, which I successfully finished in 2001. JKI supported me in expanding my skills and growing professionally.
There were further fixed-term contracts, but my dedication was recognized and encouraged – eventually I obtained my permanent position thanks to the then head of the library, a milestone that still brings me joy, security, and perspective today.
In addition to the library, I was active for many years in the staff council and in the representation for severely disabled employees. There I learned how crucial open communication and transparency are for a successful togetherness. JKI consistently supported me in further trainings, especially in dealing with new Office and Adobe applications, enabling me to keep pace with digital transformation.
Today I am part of a small but dedicated library team at the Quedlinburg, Berlin, and Braunschweig locations. Despite the distance, we pull together: team spirit, joy in the work, and the opportunity for continuous development motivate me every day.
My goal is clear: I want to continue shaping and enjoying my work here for many years to come. My path hasn’t always been straight, but the detours have made it valuable. They show that perseverance, openness to new things, and the courage to take responsibility enable long-term success—and that the JKI is an employer that makes this path possible.
