Inhalt: Wild Celery Species
There are four species of wild celery in Germany. They are the wild relatives of celeriac, which we know as tuber celery, leaf celery or perennial celery and use, for example, in soup greens or as a spice. In principle, wild plants can possess inheritable traits that are not present in the related cultivated plant species. Therefore, they are an indispensable resource for breeding in order to adapt crops to changing production conditions and to safeguard our food supply.
In addition, the four wild celeriac species are endangered throughout Germany and their distribution area covers the whole of Germany.
