It is the perfect foundation for a future career in a wide range of fields in the life sciences!

Training locations

many, because the JKI has 9 locations in Germany

Berlin

- Institute for Ecological Chemistry, Plant Analysis and Stored Product Protection -

Theoretical training takes place in Berlin at the Lise-Meitner-Schule. Some practical content and all basic training in the first year is provided at the Berufsbildungszentrum Chemie.

Start of training: September 1

Braunschweig

- Institute for Crop and Soil Science -

In Braunschweig, you will spend your first year of training at the Johannes-Selenka-Schule, after which you will attend the Justus von Liebig School in Hanover.

Start of training: August 1

Dossenheim

- Institute for Plant Protection in Fruit Crops and Viticulture -

In Dossenheim, you will be supported by the Heinrich-Lanz Schule Mannheim.

Start of training: September 1

Dresden Pillnitz

- Institute for Breeding Research on Fruit Crops -

In Dresden, you will learn the theory at the Beruflichen Schulzentrum Meißen-Radebeul.

Start of training: August 1

Groß Lüsewitz

- Institute for Breeding Research on Agricultural Crops -

In Groß Lüsewitz, you will attend the Berufsschulzentrum Nord-Landkreis Nordwestmecklenburg.

Start of training: August 1

Quedlinburg

- Institute for Breeding Research on Horticultural Crops -

- Institute for Resistance Research and Stress Tolerance -

- Institute for Biosafety in Plant Biotechnology-

In Quedlinburg, you will attend classes at the Berufsbildenden Schule Anhalt-Bitterfeld.

Start of training: August 1

What to expect

At all locations, you will learn the basic tasks of a biology lab technician.
However, depending on the institute and location, your daily work will focus on different areas. You will support our scientists in exciting research projects and assist with the administrative tasks of our institute.

Everyone learns this - Training framework curriculum

  • Sampling and sample preparation
  • Microbiological work and microscopy: e.g., isolating and identifying microorganisms, applying inoculation and culture techniques
  • Cell culture work, i.e., how to cultivate plant and animal cells for long-term experiments
  • Molecular biology and genetic engineering work: e.g., isolating DNA and detecting it by electrophoresis or performing polymerase chain reactions (PCR)
  • Biochemical work: e.g., gel electrophoresis and chromatography
  • Animal experimentation: e.g., applications, preparations, and keeping of laboratory animals in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act (TierSchG)

Different locations – different focuses ...

Berlin: “Analytics” is part of the institute's name at this location. Therefore, you will frequently detect pesticides, fragrances, or ingredients using chromatographic methods. You will also learn how to handle laboratory animals. You will gain insights into all departments at this location, from plant analytics to stock protection to soil organisms. We look forward to seeing you!

Braunschweig: Microbial and molecular biology work is just as much a focus as chemical digestion methods for feed testing and instrumental elemental analysis for soil testing. We look forward to your support!

Dossenheim: Here, you will help care for insect pests (but also beneficial insects) for experiments in the laboratory, climate chamber, greenhouse, and on the experimental field. One of the site's specialties is working with attractants.

Pay

According to TVAöD (remuneration for trainees and interns in the public sector).

Vocational school, start and duration of training

The start date of the training program varies depending on the state. Therefore, we have listed the start date for each location under Training Locations. The training program lasts 3.5 years (can be shortened to three years).
