As a part of Germany's targeted climate neutrality by 2045, special efforts are needed in agricultural practices, which are currently responsible for approx. 8% of total GHG emissions in Germany. By 2030, a 65% reduction in GHG emissions compared to 1990 is to be realized.

The Julius Kühn Institute is researching and developing innovative solutions to effectively reduce GHG emissions, through developing effective strategies in plant production and harnessing carbon sequestration potentials. The research activities cover the entire plant production chain, from the production of peat substitutes to protect peat soils, the development of new climate-friendly plant varieties, climate change mitigation in viticulture and urban greenery, to climate-optimized storage technology for harvested crops and carbon-neutral fumigation processes for wood.

This platform provides insight into the Julius Kühn Institute's research activities on climate change mitigation in crop production systems. It provides information on the backgrounds and objectives of selected ongoing research projects, enables access to project contact persons for networking and exchange, provides progress, new findings and results, and informs about relevant events.
